Reaching for the Stars: Is Vascular Access Device Infection Prevention out of our Grasp?

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the controversy about proposed US public reporting of device-related infections that occur during hospitalizations.
  • Compare and contrast central line-associated bloodstream infections with hospital onset bacteremia and fungemia.
  • Describe the human and financial impacts of hospital- acquired infections.
  • Identify organisms frequently associated with peripheral vascular catheter (PIVC) device-related infections.
  • Analyze available technologies to prevent PIVC, and all vascular device infections.
